LED lighting prices dropping rapidly due to increased competition

Siu Han, Taipei; Jackie Chang

large influx of LED firms has been causing the industry to compete by lowering prices. The magnitude of price falls in the first half of 2011 has reached the level of the total price fall of 2010. Some solar firms have been reducing the price for lighting products, some up to 40%.

According to Taiwan-based LED packaging house, Edison Opto, the market of LED TV has been disappointing causing many firms to shift focus to LED lightings. Samsung took the lead to decrease price contributing to the increasing competition of the industry. However, despite the rapid price falls, industry sources indicated the firms are still waiting for the demand to grow.

Aeon Lighting announced the price decrease of all its LED lighting products with the largest decrease around 40%. The price fall includes indoor and outdoor LED lightings, plus LED streetlights, and large lighting systems.

Aeon stated the demand for LED lighting in first half of 2011 was moderate. As of June, the firm has been operating at full capacity, added Aeon.

Industry observers pointed out the price of 40W retrofit LED light bulbs has been falling to US$15 from US$20-25 in first half of 2011 due to the aggressive expansion of Samsung.

The price of LED lighting is expected to fall continuously to end of 2011.
