Quanta expected to see 20% sequential decrease in December notebook shipments

Mainly Due to short supply of hard disk drives (HDD) arising from the impact of flooding in Thailand, Taiwan-based ODM maker Quanta Computer's shipments of notebook PCs in December is expected to drop by 20% on month, according to market analysts in Taiwan.

In response, Quanta indicated that sequential decrease in December shipments of notebook PCs is already as expected but the decrease will be smaller than the on-month drop of 16.98% in November shipments. Despite of the impact of the HDD shortage, the target of 5-10% growth in 2011 shipment volume from 2010 remains unchanged, Quanta pointed out.

Quanta shipped 4.4 million notebook PCs in November, falling by 16.98% on month, the sources noted.

Global HDD production capacity in the fourth quarter of 2011 has shrunk by 30% from the preceding quarter and short supply will continue in the first quarter of 2012 at least, the sources pointed out.
