Panel makers face technological challenges to upgrade

Rebecca Kuo, Tainan; Adam Hwang

As iPad and iPhone have aroused demand for displays and touch panels with higher performance standards, makers are under pressure to upgrade specifications in their road maps, according to industry sources.

Display, touch panels: Technological road maps

Specification

Planned upgrades

Thickness of display panels

For example:
For 7-inch WSVGA, from 2.35mm
currently to 2mm in 2H11 and to 1.9mm in 2012;
for 10.1-inch WXGA, from 2.8mm to 2.3mm

Thickness of glass substrates

Increasing use of 0.3mm and 0.4mm glass substrates in place of 0.5mm at 5G plants; 0.5mm glass substrates have been adopted at 6G plants

Power saving

For 7-inch WSVGA panels, from 2.5W to 2W and further to 1.7W in 2H12; for 10.1-inch panels, from 3.6W to 2.7W and further to 2.2W by the end of 2012

Resolution

1280×800 for 7-inch panels and 1920×1200 for 10.1-inch panels in 2H12

Luminance (brightness)

500-600nits with 1,000:1 contrast at the end of 2012

Thickness of cover lens (glass)

From 0.7mm to 0.4mm in 2H12

Thickness of touch sensors

From 0.5mm to 0.33mm

Multi-touch

From 2-10 to more than 10

Manufacturing process of touch sensors

From out cell to on-cell, and further to in-cell
