Taiwan-based notebook makers Quanta Computer and Wistron both saw their revenues and notebook shipments drop on month in July due to their downstream clients reducing orders for July as back-to-school demand in the US and Europe being weaker than expected.

Quanta announced consolidated revenues of NT$85.59 billion (US$2.95 billion) for July, down 3.8% on month and 0.7% on year with combined consolidated revenues from January to July reached NT$603.76 billion, down 2.98% on year. As for notebook shipments, Quanta shipped 4.5 million units in July, down from five million units in June. For the third quarter, Quanta is still maintaining its forecast of a sequential growth of 5-10%, but evaluating from its current orders, the actual growth will be at around 5%.

Wistron announced consolidated revenues of NT$51.56 billion for July, down 11.53% on month, but up 5.28% on year, with the combined consolidated revenues from the first seven months in 2011 reached NT$348.05 billion, up 2.03% on year. Wistron shipped only 2.4 million notebooks in July, down from 2.8 million units in June, while LCD TV shipments also dropped from 700,000 units to 550,000 units.

Market watchers pointed out that Wistron's major clients are Acer and Dell and is mainly producing their consumer notebooks. Due to Acer is still in the middle of clearing up its inventory, its orders have still been rather weak recently. Wistron still expects its third-quarter revenues to grow 10% sequentially with the shipment volume to recover gradually in August and September and reach the peak in September.

In July, Wistron also shipped one million desktop PCs, up from 950,000 units in June, 150,000 servers, 500,000 handsets and one million LCD monitors, up from 950,000 units in June.
