Shipments of handsets from Taiwan grew 10% sequentially to 23 million units in the third quarter of 2011, buoyed by the release of a number of ODM feature phones by handset vendors and continued growth in smartphone shipments by HTC, according to the latest data collected by Digitimes Research.

HTC ranked as Taiwan's top handset exporter in the third quarter with shipments totaling 13.8 million units. Arima Communications followed with 6.85 million units, thanks to orders for feature phones from Sony Ericsson and Motorola Mobility.

Shipments from Chi Mei Communication Systems (CMCS), a handset unit of Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), went down sharply in the third quarter as Hewlett-Packard's (HP) decision to discontinue its webOS-based hardware business affected CMCS's shipments. CMCS's ranking was down one notch to the fourth place as a result.

Shipments of smartphones from Taiwan handset makers grew over 80% on year to 16 million units in the third quarter, accounting for 63% of Taiwan's total shipments of mobile phones, Digitimes Research data showed.
